Privacy Policy for Chess Openings Coach

Chess Openings Coach is a chess training application developed by Ton Orbe. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles and how it is used.

Information the App Handles

Chess Openings Coach is designed primarily as an offline chess study tool. The app may handle the following information when you choose to use related features:

• PGN chess files selected or imported by you;
• chess game headers contained in PGN files, such as player names, event names, dates, ratings, ECO codes, and results;
• opening repertoires, study lines, move trees, engine evaluations, and app preferences created inside the app;
• a chess username that you enter when using an online import feature, such as importing public games from Lichess.

How the Information Is Used

The app uses this information only for app functionality, including:

• opening and reading PGN files;
• building and saving your opening repertoires;
• generating local opening trees from your games;
• searching chess games by header or position;
• displaying chess analysis, move statistics, and coach-style guidance;
• saving your visual and study preferences.

Local Storage

Repertoires, imported PGN-derived data, live repertoire trees, and app preferences are stored locally on your device. You can delete locally stored app data by using the app’s delete features, clearing the app’s data in Android settings, or uninstalling the app.

Online Features

If you use an online import feature, the app may contact a third-party chess service, such as Lichess, to download publicly available chess games associated with the username you provide. This feature is optional and user-initiated.

Chess Openings Coach does not use online import features to sell your data or to create advertising profiles.

Engine Analysis

Chess engine analysis is performed locally on your device. Board positions analyzed by the local engine are not sent to the developer’s server.

Data Sharing

Chess Openings Coach does not sell your personal data. The app does not share your imported PGN files, saved repertoires, or live repertoire data with the developer or third parties, except when you intentionally use an online feature that contacts a third-party chess service to retrieve public chess games.

Third-Party Services

The app may use third-party chess data sources only when you choose to use an online import feature. Those third-party services may have their own privacy policies.

Children’s Privacy

Chess Openings Coach is a general chess training app and is not specifically directed to children. The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

The app is designed to keep your chess study data on your device. When online features are used, network communication should be made through secure HTTPS connections where supported.

Data Retention and Deletion

Data created or imported in the app is retained locally on your device unless you delete it. You may delete app data by using available in-app delete features, clearing the app’s storage in Android settings, or uninstalling the app.

If the app later adds a cloud account, server sync, analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or another online service, this Privacy Policy will be updated to describe the additional data handling.

Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
